A Son – The Son

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3.16

The Greek word which translates “son” is “huiov.” Specifically, it is the masculine form of the word “huios” indicating a male offspring. It is a word that is used primarily of a male offspring and seldom used of anything other than a human being.

It is indicative of the work of God because it speaks more importantly of the fact that the Son was a real Person. Although fully God and fully man, this was God walking about in a human body. The writer of Hebrews reports: “Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me.” (Hebrews 10.5)

This great work was anticipated and foretold by Isaiah, the prophet. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9.6) Notice the wording. “A child is born” speaks of the virgin birth – a real physical birth neither spiritual nor ethereal – but the birth of a real child, in real time through the agency of a real woman. Isaiah continues by saying “unto us a son is given” which speaks of the child’s relationship with His Father – He was provided to the world as the Son of God – the only begotten and only one of His kind.

While some believe that anyone could have done what Jesus did had they never sinned, such belief finds no reality in either fact or in God’s purpose. In this sense, it is important to understand that there is only one Jesus Christ and only one Person who fits the need. He alone fits the requirements for being the only begotten of the Father. He is the One who is full of grace and truth and has the ability to offer it to a lost and needy world. (John 1.14)

No other one can claim the credentials as can this only begotten Son of God. In His explaination to Thomas and the other disciples, Jesus stated emphatically, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14.6) Notice that He uses the definite article, “the,” before each of His declarations. The definite article limits the case to being completely unique and singular in its application. When Jesus said, “I am the way,” He laid claim to being the one and only way. When He said, “I am the truth,” He laid claim to being the one and only truth.” When He said, “I am the life,” He laid claim to being the only life.

When someone diminishes the weight of the Sonship of Jesus Christ, they remove any possibility of anyone gaining eternal life; for, eternal life is possible only through the Son of God and His work on Calvary. “In him was life; and the life was the light of men….That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” (John 1.4, 9)

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4.12)
