My People

“If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” II Chronicles 7.13, 14

The words of this exhortation and promise hold for us specifics that apply to the people of God. What we must understand, however, is the identity of “my people.” Who is it that can invoke the blessings of God? Furthermore, upon what land can these promises be claimed?

The context of this passage finds itself within a special time of worship – the time when Solomon was dedicating the Temple. It was a time when the nation was celebrating the presence of God as He recognized their worship by sending fire from heaven. It was a time in Israel when the nation sacrificed and prayed to the God who had chosen them from out of the world to be a particular and peculiar people unto Himself. They were the ones upon whom God had showered His blessings and had identified as His nation.

Understanding that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable,” we can find within this prophecy application to the people of God throughout history – even into our own time. Those who have put their faith in the saving power of Christ’s redemptive blood should not expect those who are outside the household of faith to think, look or act like they belong to the family of God. On the other side of that coin, however, those who are followers of God through Christ Jesus should think, look and act differently from the world.

The Apostle Paul enjoins the believer to recognize and embrace his position as a Temple of the Living God: “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” (II Corinthians 6.14-18)

The “My people” of the present includes those who have by faith trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation – those who have gone beyond a simple prayer – and, have entered into a relationship with God’s Son. These are they from any walk of life regardless of geographical location who put Christ first.

The “My people” cannot expect unbelievers to bring about blessing on our land. The “My people” cannot pawn off our responsibility into the laps of unbelievers. It is the responsibility of “My people” to invoke God’s blessings upon our land. It is the responsibility of “My people” to turn from our wicked ways and seek God’s face. “My people” have never brought about true Spirit-sent revival. Revival comes when “My people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways.” Only when “My people” are revived shall we see healing in our land.
