Benefits

Benefits
“A Psalm of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits….” Psalm 103.1, 2
Does it happen to you the way it sometimes happens to me? You know – how difficult memories pop up out of nowhere and bring back issues you thought had been long ago buried in your forgetfulness? Wouldn’t it be nice if good memories could so crowd our minds and hearts that there would be no room for negativity.

Some of what invades our thoughts comes as a result of what we have formed as habits. God’s Word clearly expresses a truism about our habits: “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” (Psalm 119.11) Habitually, and with a plan, hiding God’s Word in our hearts will aid us in developing a more positive spiritual outlook on life. The wise man exhorts us to: “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4.23)

The word “keep” translates a Hebrew term indicating something that we carefully guard. It suggests that there is something so valuable that we would never allow it to fall into disrepair or neglect. And, the word “diligence” indicates a careful attending to something that is prized.

So, where do we begin in changing our habits of negativity? The Psalmist encourages us to remember all of the blessings (benefits) our God has already bestowed upon us.

He forgives all of our iniquities. Iniquities are those bad things we have within us as a result of our sinful nature – things we cannot “fix” on our own. Incredibly, God forgives them. He doesn’t cover them – paint over them – or not look at them. He forgives our vile sinful nature. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us and made possible our complete cleansing – because of something He did, not because of something we could do.

He heals all of our diseases. Diseases, physically, are a result of the introduction of alien elements into a healthy body which create problems. Diseases, spiritually, result from the introduction of things false into the heart and mind. For all that, our God has the answers and restores us to spiritual health again.

He redeems our lives from destruction. While some would suggest that this refers to the salvation event, it actually supplies blessings for our daily living. A true follower of Christ would not live a self-destructive life. He would refrain from imbibing in those things that would bring his life to an untimely demise for, he would not be drunk with wine (or any other emotional or physical derailing substance), but he would fill himself with God’s Spirit. (Ephesians 5.18) To be fully aware of God’s creation and fellowship is truly a blessing.

He crowns us with lovingkindness and tender mercies. The word “crown” speaks of an adornment for one’s head. It also suggests a circle of attention – that which draws the attention of those around. Those who are followers of Christ will exude a spirit of tender love and compassion from the inner most part of our being.

He satisfies our mouths with good things. Being satisfied speaks of complete satisfaction as He leads us beside still waters restoring our souls. Satisfaction – having more than all we need, He offers our mouths (desires, eagerness for wealth) complete fulfillment in Him. Our cravings are satisfied in Him.

He recreates youthful excitement within us. Have you ever noticed how a dour disposition can be turned into a reciprocal smile when you offer a pleasant greeting? Have you ever noticed the peace and contentment on the countenance of some senior saints who have spent their lives walking with Jesus?

There are great benefits in serving and walking with Jesus. We should stop often, be still and replay in our minds the wonderful blessings of our loving Lord. Copyright © 2025 Dr. John H. Hill, All rights reserved.
