The Way

“And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left my master destitute of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master’s brethren. And I bowed my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter for his son.” Genesis 24.27, & 48

Twice in this narrative Abraham’s servant emphasizes the fact that he was led by the LORD God of his master, Abraham. Throughout God’s Word many “ways” mentioned some good and others not so good. As a matter of concern to the follower of Christ we should be concerned with these “ways.”

The writer of the Proverbs noted that: “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” (Proverbs 14.12) This he reiterates in Proverbs 16.25, “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” How unfortunate it is to realize that our “way” (the path we customarily travel) would be one that leads to an untimely death.

Unfortunately for us, should we continue to follow our own way the throes of disaster only strengthen their grip on our ability to succeed. For, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17.9) And, apart from the solid foundation of God’s revealed Word, we tend to succumb to the whims of the fallen human heart. Since the heart of the fool testifies to the assumption that there is no God (Psalm 14.1), the unbeliever is devoid of spiritual understanding. And, I might add that the one who believes but is not obedient will tend to interpret situations and testings into nonbiblical conclusions rather than things intended for our learning.

Jesus openly admitted to being the “Way.” (John 14.6) He is also the Truth and the Life requiring that no one is able to approach the Father unless they come through Him. That puts a different light on those who claim to follow God, but never mention Jesus Christ. Even this servant of Abraham admitted to the fact that he had faith in the LORD (Jehovah, YAHWEH) God (Elohiym) of Abraham.

The beginning step in being a traveler in the right way is to approach God the Father through His only begotten Son (John 3.16). Once upon the “Way,” the believer is afforded understanding and is able to: “Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.” (Proverbs 9.6) We must understand, too, that in order to avail ourselves of this understand we must be obedient to the One who called us. When we walk with the Lord in the light of His word we are afforded wisdom and understanding beyond our human ability; however, when we step aside from obedience to the Way, our spiritual minds are again darkened to the clear understanding and application of God’s direction.

Our ability to make wise decisions becomes fatally flawed as our decisions become more and more based upon the world’s system rather than upon God’s leading.

“Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” (Romans 6.16)
