Waxing Old
“And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.” Hebrews 1.10-12

The statement concerning the “Creator” is not only clear but is also repeated in several places in God’s Word. Here, the Creator is called “Lord” and is identified as the “first begotten” Son. John, in identifying the Creator, uses the term “monogenes” (mονογενής) meaning “only born one.” “Monogenes” carries the weight of a physically born child who is singularly unique.
We might remember the statement of the angel when he appeared to Mary and have wondered at his statement to her: “…that holy thing…” when referencing her child. Jesus Christ, the eternally existent One who was in the beginning with God performed the Creation of the world. In identifying Himself to Nicodemus, Jesus called Himself the “only begotten Son of God” (a statement that many modern translations weaken, See John 3.16).
Established as a fundamental of the Christian faith is that Jesus Christ created and sustains all of Creation. “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” (Colossians 1.15-17)
Not only is Jesus Christ the unique Son of God who created all that we understand to be a part of our universe – including living and non-living – seen and not seen – but, it is all held together at His command.
Many today are fearful of global warming and other pending catastrophes; however, as alarming as possible earth-ending events may be, the end of time and the end of the world are squarely in the hands of our Creator – not in man-made or natural events. As a follower of Christ, our faith is more than a fire escape from hell: it is in fact the foundation upon which we live and move and have our being. (Acts 17.28)
The world and all that is in it will end at exactly the time God intends and not one second before. What we now experience will “wax old as doth a garment.” The phrase “wax old” translates a verb which means, “to become obsolete.” (παλαιόω – palaioo – “to become worn out, obsolete”)
A pre-determined time is coming when even the clouds will be rolled up as a scroll (Isaiah 34.4; Revelation 6.14) and the world as we know it will be folded up and put away (Hebrews 1.11, 12) in order to make was for God’s New Creation. When that happens, it will be at the pleasure of the Creator – in His time and according to His will. (Revelation 21.1, 2)
Let me encourage you to trust God. After all, He is still in control.
