Your Light

“Ye are the light of the world.A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew5.14-16

It’s a funny thing about light and darkness. I heard an illustration on more than one occasion suggesting that there is no such thing as darkness, but rather simply an absence of light. No one flips a switch and turns on the darkness, but one can flip on a switch and dispel the darkness by powering a light.

As I get older, I try to choose a light that is the most conducive to my ability to see – especially to read. It seems that there is no light quite as good as sunlight. In a well-lit room, I sometimes have difficulty reading so, I’ll take my text outside – into the sunlight – and I can normally read even the fine print. So, it seems the source of light and the color of light have an affect on one’s ability to see clearly. Do the on-coming blue tinted headlights of modern vehicles help you see better or do they hinder your vision?

Light can be perceived in a positive sense or a negative one. Should you drop a small object on the floor, a good light will aid in the retrieval of your lost object. However, that same light may shine in a dark corner that hasn’t been cleaned for a while and expose dust bunnies and other uninvited objects. When the light hits the floor there may even be some unwanted guests that had been unnoticed until they scurried back into another hiding place.

When I was younger, I had some black lights. They were quite fascinating because, when shined upon certain objects, the objects took on a completely different appearance. Some parts of the piece would become less visible while others would nearly jump off the canvass.

The world is filled with various types of lights. Some are even lights that obscure and skew one’s vision so that what is perceived is not what is really there. God’s Word says: “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” (II Corinthians 11.4)

The true follower of Christ must be certain that the lamp at our feet and the light to our path (Psalm119.105) finds its energy from the written, revealed Word of God. Many lights have been powered by emotion or some family tradition which are diametrically opposed to the true teaching of the Bible.

Everything we believe and teach should be filtered through the Holy Scriptures so that our light will lead people to the truth and not to something amiss. Then, we hold our light up high so the world can see it.
